A detailed 1848 steel engraving by Adrian Schleich, depicting scenes from Goethe's Faust within an elaborate Gothic architectural frame.
This steel engraving by Adrian Schleich, dated 1848, depicts a scene from Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's tragedy, Faust. The composition is based on a design by the German artist Engelbert Seibertz. The central panel captures the intimate moment between Faust and Gretchen, framed by an elaborate Gothic architectural structure that mimics the form of a church window or a triptych.
Surrounding the central embrace are four smaller vignettes illustrating other episodes from the narrative, providing a visual summary of the play's progression. The decorative framework includes floral motifs and heraldic elements, reflecting the mid-nineteenth-century fascination with medieval aesthetics and the Gothic revival. The presence of Mephistopheles, lurking in the shadows behind the central couple, introduces a subtle element of tension to the otherwise romantic scene.
Schleich, a skilled engraver, employs precise line work to render the textures of the period clothing and the architectural details of the frame. The monochromatic palette emphasises the clarity of the composition, allowing the viewer to focus on the narrative interplay between the figures. This work was produced for a publication by the J.G. Cotta publishing house, which was known for its high-quality editions of German literary classics. The engraving demonstrates the technical proficiency required to translate complex painterly designs into the medium of steel plate, a process that allowed for the mass distribution of fine art illustrations during the Victorian era. The inclusion of the date and the artist's initials within the lower heraldic shield provides a clear provenance for this specific edition of the Faust cycle.
