A striking example of German Expressionism, 'Female Rider' by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner features bold colours and simplified forms to convey raw energy and psychological intensity. The painting depicts a female figure on horseback against an abstract background.
Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, a German Expressionist painter and printmaker, was a founder of the artists group Die Brücke (The Bridge), a key group leading to the foundation of Expressionism in 20th-century art. He volunteered for military service in the First World War, but suffered a breakdown and was eventually discharged. In 1937, his work was branded as "degenerate" by the Nazis, and over 600 of his works were removed from German museums. He committed suicide in 1938. 'Female Rider' exemplifies Kirchner's distinctive style, characterised by bold colours and simplified forms. The painting depicts a nude or semi-nude female figure astride a horse, set against an abstract background of green and yellow planes, possibly representing a stylised field or hillside. The composition is striking, with the figures rendered in a deliberately crude manner, typical of Expressionist art's rejection of academic naturalism. The colour palette is intense, featuring contrasting hues of pink, blue, black, green, and yellow, which contribute to the painting's emotional impact. The overall effect is one of raw energy and psychological intensity, reflecting the Expressionist movement's concern with subjective experience and emotional expression.
