A modernist exploration of the Femme Cheval motif, blending Afro-Cuban mythology with Surrealist form.
Wifredo Lam, a Cuban artist of Chinese, Spanish, and African descent, developed a visual language that synthesised European modernism with the spiritual and cultural traditions of the Caribbean. The Femme Cheval, or Horse-Headed Woman, is a recurring motif in his work, representing a fusion of human and animal forms. This figure draws upon the concept of possession in Santería, where a practitioner becomes a horse for the spirit, allowing the deity to ride them.
The composition features a central, elongated figure that merges human anatomy with equine characteristics. Lam employs a restricted palette, utilising muted greys, ochres, and blacks to define the form. The lines are deliberate and calligraphic, creating a sense of movement within the static figure. The background remains minimal, allowing the viewer to focus on the interplay between the organic shapes and the rigid, almost mechanical elements of the figure's structure.
Lam spent significant time in Europe, where he associated with the Surrealist movement and Pablo Picasso. These influences are visible in the fragmented planes and the distortion of the figure. However, his work remains distinct due to its specific engagement with Afro-Cuban identity and mythology. By blending these disparate influences, Lam created a visual vocabulary that addresses themes of transformation and spiritual connection. The work avoids traditional perspective, opting instead for a flattened, symbolic space that emphasises the ritualistic nature of the subject. The resulting image is a meditation on the intersection of the physical and the metaphysical, rendered with a precision that characterises Lam's mid-century output.
