Painted in 1849, this work depicts a scene from William Shakespeare's The Tempest. Ferdinand, the son of the King of Naples, stands in a forest clearing, listening to the music of Ariel. The spirit Ariel is shown as a translucent, green-clad figure, accompanied by small, bat-winged sprites. Millais painted this work during the early years of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, a group that sought to return to the detailed observation and bright colour palettes found in art before the time of Raphael.

The composition is notable for its rejection of traditional chiaroscuro. Instead, Millais employs a flat, bright lighting scheme that allows for the meticulous rendering of every leaf, blade of grass, and texture on Ferdinand's costume. The artist spent significant time painting the foliage outdoors, ensuring a level of botanical accuracy that was unconventional for the period.
