A detailed Flemish engraving by Adriaen Collaert depicting Ferdinand Magellan surrounded by mythological figures and maritime imagery.
This engraving by Adriaen Collaert depicts the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan seated at a table on the deck of his vessel. The composition is characteristic of late sixteenth-century Flemish printmaking, blending historical subject matter with mythological allegory. Magellan is shown in the centre, engaged with navigational instruments, while the surrounding sea is populated by various mythical creatures and deities.
To the left, a figure resembling Apollo or a solar deity strides across the water, while a large bird carries a smaller animal in its talons above. On the right, a siren holds a circular object, and a bearded figure, perhaps representing a river god or a personification of the southern regions, drinks from a vessel. The scene is framed by clouds and turbulent waters, reflecting the era's fascination with the Age of Discovery and the unknown territories mapped by explorers. The ship itself is detailed with rigging and armaments, grounding the fantastical elements in the reality of maritime travel.
Collaert was a member of a prominent family of engravers and publishers in Antwerp. His work often involved the reproduction of designs by other artists, though he was also a skilled draughtsman in his own right. This print belongs to a series documenting famous explorers, a popular subject for collectors of the period who sought to understand the expanding world through visual media. The Latin inscription at the base provides context for the voyage, noting the circumnavigation of the globe. The precision of the line work and the density of the allegorical figures demonstrate the technical proficiency required for copperplate engraving during this period. The print serves as a record of how European audiences conceptualised the voyages of discovery, mixing empirical observation with classical mythology.
