A 1961 abstract composition by Cy Twombly, featuring gestural marks and a light palette inspired by the Italian summer.
Ferragosto III, created in 1961, belongs to a series of works produced by Cy Twombly during his residence in Rome. The title refers to the Italian mid-August holiday, a period traditionally associated with the height of summer heat. This work reflects the artist's engagement with the physical environment and the sensory experience of the Mediterranean climate.
The composition is characterised by a light, off-white ground that supports a series of gestural marks. Twombly employs a combination of oil paint, crayon, and graphite to create a layered surface. The application of colour is sparse, focusing on shades of red, pink, and muted earth tones that suggest the intensity of the sun and the arid quality of the Italian summer. The marks vary in weight, ranging from thin, scratchy graphite lines to more fluid, dripped paint applications that move across the canvas.
Unlike the dense, chaotic surfaces found in some of his earlier works, Ferragosto III maintains a sense of openness. The arrangement of marks avoids a central focus, allowing the eye to move across the surface in a non-linear fashion. The interaction between the drawn line and the painted stroke creates a tension between the graphic and the painterly. This work demonstrates the artist's interest in the relationship between memory, place, and the act of mark-making itself. By stripping away representational elements, Twombly focuses on the rhythm and speed of the hand. The resulting image functions as a record of a specific time and place, translated through a personal visual language that prioritises spontaneity and the physical presence of the materials.
