Description
A dynamic abstract composition from 1961, Ferragosto IV captures the heat and light of an Italian summer through layered gestural marks and a warm palette.
Ferragosto IV is a significant work from the series Cy Twombly produced in Rome during the summer of 1961. The title refers to the Italian public holiday Ferragosto, which occurs in mid-August. During this period, Twombly moved away from the darker, more aggressive markings of his earlier work, adopting a lighter palette that reflects the intense heat and light of the Italian summer.
The composition is defined by a sense of urgency and spontaneity. Twombly employs a variety of media, including oil paint, wax crayon, and graphite, to create a layered surface. The canvas acts as a field for gestural marks, ranging from frantic scribbles to broad, sweeping strokes of red and ochre. These marks do not form recognisable figures, yet they suggest movement and energy. The negative space of the off-white ground is as active as the marks themselves, allowing the composition to breathe.
Twombly often incorporated elements of graffiti and handwriting into his paintings, and this work is no exception. The lines appear to hover between drawing and painting, blurring the distinction between the two disciplines. The application of paint is varied, with some areas showing thin, translucent washes and others displaying thick, tactile impasto. This variation in texture adds a physical dimension to the work, drawing the viewer into the process of its creation. The work captures a specific moment in time, translating the atmosphere of a Roman summer into a series of abstract gestures. It remains a primary example of Twombly's ability to balance chaos with a controlled, rhythmic structure.
