Alberto Burri
A striking example of Alberto Burri's Ferro series, this work explores the raw materiality of industrial iron through welding and structural composition.
Alberto Burri, a physician by training, turned to art following his experiences as a prisoner of war. His practice rejects traditional painterly techniques in favour of raw, industrial materials. This work belongs to his Ferro series, where he utilised discarded iron sheets, often salvaged from industrial sites, to construct compositions that prioritise physical presence over representational imagery. The composition is defined by the juxtaposition of heavy metal plates. Burri manipulated these sheets through cutting, bending, and welding, creating a surface that possesses a distinct tactile quality. The seams, where the metal is joined, are visible and deliberate, showing the heat-affected zones of the welding process. These marks are not merely functional, they are integral to the aesthetic of the piece, documenting the physical transformation of the material. Unlike the smooth surfaces of traditional painting, this work engages with the viewer through its weight, texture, and oxidation. The colour palette is restricted to the natural tones of weathered iron, ranging from deep charcoal to rusted ochre. By stripping away the illusion of depth found in conventional art, Burri forces an encounter with the object itself. The arrangement of the plates creates a tension between the rigid geometry of the metal and the organic, unpredictable nature of its decay. This approach reflects the post-war European context, where artists sought new modes of expression that could address the trauma and material reality of the era. The work remains a study in the properties of matter, demonstrating how industrial waste can be recontextualised as a medium for artistic inquiry.
