A satirical lithograph by Willem van Konijnenburg from 1897, depicting a chaotic scene of judicial and social disorder in the Netherlands.
This lithograph, titled Fiat Justitia! Celstraf te Nieuwer-Amstel, appeared as a supplement to the Dutch weekly publication De Kroniek on 22 August 1897. Willem van Konijnenburg, a Dutch artist known for his contributions to Symbolism and his graphic work, produced this satirical commentary on the judicial and social climate of the late nineteenth century. The image depicts a judge, hands pressed firmly over his ears, surrounded by police officers in a chaotic urban scene. The composition is filled with frantic energy, featuring figures in motion, overturned furniture, and an umbrella being used to shield the central figure from debris falling from above.
Van Konijnenburg employs a clear, linear style typical of his illustrative work for periodicals. The drawing captures a sense of disorder, with the judge appearing overwhelmed by the surrounding tumult. The title, Fiat Justitia, translates to Let justice be done, a phrase often used in legal contexts, which here serves as an ironic counterpoint to the scene of confusion and institutional failure. The inclusion of police officers and the specific reference to Nieuwer-Amstel suggests a critique of local administrative or judicial actions of the period. The work functions as a visual editorial, using caricature to convey a specific viewpoint on the state of law and order. The print demonstrates the artist's ability to translate complex social observations into a readable, graphic format. The use of lithography allows for the reproduction of these fine, expressive lines, maintaining the immediacy of the original drawing. This piece provides a window into the political discourse of the Netherlands at the turn of the century, reflecting the tensions between authority and the public.
