Description

A serene Impressionist study of the French countryside, capturing the open skies and textured grasses of the Plain of Gennevilliers.

Gustave Caillebotte produced this study of the Plain of Gennevilliers during a period when he moved away from the urban subjects of Paris to focus on the rural surroundings of his property at Petit-Gennevilliers. The work captures the open expanse of the French countryside with a focus on the shifting light and atmospheric conditions of the sky.

The composition is dominated by a low horizon line, which allows the artist to dedicate a significant portion of the canvas to the cloud-filled sky. Caillebotte employs short, broken brushstrokes to render the textures of the grasses and the movement of the clouds. The palette relies on soft greens, ochres, and pale blues, reflecting the natural light of the region. Unlike his earlier, more structured urban compositions, this piece demonstrates a looser approach to form, consistent with the practices of his Impressionist contemporaries.

Caillebotte often painted the Gennevilliers area, finding interest in the agricultural rhythms of the plain. This particular view avoids the inclusion of human figures or buildings, concentrating instead on the raw interaction between the earth and the sky. The application of paint is direct, with visible texture that conveys the tactile quality of the vegetation. By choosing this specific vantage point, the artist invites the viewer to observe the quiet, unadorned character of the rural environment. The work remains a clear example of his later interest in plein air painting, where the primary objective is the observation of light and colour in a natural setting.
