A woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicting travellers at the Shinagawa station on the Tokaido Road, featuring a view of the bay and Mount Fuji.
This woodblock print belongs to the series Fifty-three Stations on the Tokaido Road, a collection documenting the route between Edo and Kyoto. Utagawa Hiroshige captures the atmosphere of travel during the Edo period, focusing on the specific character of each station. This particular sheet depicts Shinagawa, the first station after departing Edo.
The composition is divided into two distinct zones. The foreground features travellers and porters, rendered with a focus on their practical attire and the physical exertion of their journey. Their figures are depicted with clear outlines and flat colour fields, typical of the Ukiyo-e style. The background provides a panoramic view of the bay, with small sailing vessels dotting the water and the distant silhouette of Mount Fuji visible on the horizon.
Hiroshige uses a combination of cartographic detail and artistic observation. The inclusion of text boxes identifying specific locations within the scene suggests a function as a guide or souvenir for travellers. The palette is restrained, relying on soft blues, earthy browns, and muted greens to create a sense of distance and atmospheric perspective. The print demonstrates the artist's ability to balance the mundane details of daily life with the broader geography of the Japanese countryside. By documenting the movement of people along this major thoroughfare, Hiroshige provides a record of the social and physical environment of nineteenth-century Japan. The work remains a primary source for understanding the logistics of travel and the visual culture of the period.
