Adolphe Monticelli, a painter from Marseille, developed a distinct approach to oil painting that prioritised texture and light over precise draughtsmanship. In this work, the artist employs his signature technique of applying thick, impasto paint to the surface. The figures appear to emerge from a dreamlike, atmospheric setting, where the boundaries between the subjects and the surrounding forest are softened by a hazy, golden-red glow. Monticelli often drew inspiration from the fêtes galantes of the eighteenth century, yet he translated these themes through a personal, almost abstract lens.
