A detailed woodblock print by Katsukawa Shun'ei depicting the final act of the classic Kabuki play, Kanadehon Chūshingura.
This woodblock print by Katsukawa Shun'ei depicts a scene from the final act of the Kanadehon Chūshingura, the famous Kabuki play based on the historical vendetta of the forty-seven rōnin. Shun'ei, a student of Katsukawa Shunshō, was well known for his expressive portrayals of actors and theatrical narratives. The composition employs a split-level perspective, common in Japanese prints of the period, to convey both the interior drama of the foreground figures and the chaotic activity occurring in the background courtyard.
In the foreground, a central male figure stands in a formal pose, draped in a patterned kimono, while attendants and women observe him. The artist uses clear, controlled lines to define the facial features and the folds of the garments, characteristic of the Katsukawa school's focus on realistic actor likenesses. The background reveals a bustling scene where figures are engaged in various tasks, framed by architectural elements that provide a sense of spatial depth. The colour palette is restrained, relying on soft ochres, muted blues, and subtle reds to maintain harmony across the busy composition.
The print serves as a visual record of the theatrical conventions of the Edo period. By focusing on the 'Finale' or 'Taibi', the artist captures the resolution of the narrative, where the tension of the preceding acts gives way to the aftermath of the loyal retainers' mission. The inclusion of the red sign in the background, bearing the characters for 'loyal samurai', acts as a thematic anchor for the entire series. This work demonstrates the technical precision of late eighteenth-century woodblock printing, where multiple blocks were used to achieve the layered colours and textures seen in the textiles and interior screens.
