A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai, depicting the iconic red-hued Mount Fuji against a clear, cloud-streaked sky.
This iconic woodblock print, often referred to as Red Fuji, belongs to the series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji. Katsushika Hokusai produced this work during the Edo period, a time when travel and the appreciation of famous sites gained popularity among the Japanese public. The composition focuses on the volcanic peak of Mount Fuji, rendered in a striking reddish-brown hue that contrasts with the deep blue sky.
The sky is filled with horizontal, stylised cloud formations that suggest a crisp, early morning atmosphere. At the base of the mountain, a dense forest of dark green trees provides a grounding element to the composition. Hokusai employs a refined use of colour gradation, known as bokashi, to transition the sky from a deep indigo at the top to a lighter shade near the horizon. The mountain itself is depicted with a sense of monumental scale, its snow-capped summit catching the light of the rising sun.
Unlike many of his contemporaries who focused on urban scenes or portraits of actors, Hokusai turned his attention to the natural world. His approach to the mountain is both graphic and observational. The print demonstrates his mastery of the woodblock medium, particularly in the clean lines and the deliberate application of pigment. The work remains a primary example of the Ukiyo-e tradition, reflecting the technical precision required for multi-block printing. By simplifying the form of the mountain into a geometric triangle, Hokusai creates a powerful visual statement that relies on colour and balance rather than excessive detail.
