A striking abstract work from Yves Klein's 1961 Fire Painting series, created by scorching cardboard with a flame thrower to produce organic, charred patterns.
Yves Klein, a central figure in post-war European art, produced his series of Fire Paintings between 1961 and 1962. This work, F36, emerges from his experimentation at the Centre d'Essais du Gaz de France. Klein utilised a flame thrower to scorch the surface of cardboard, allowing the physical energy of fire to dictate the composition. The process involves the interaction of heat, oxygen, and the material substrate, resulting in a charred, organic aesthetic that captures the ephemeral nature of combustion.
The visual character of the piece is defined by the contrast between the scorched, dark centre and the radiating, lighter edges. The heat has singed the material, creating a gradient of soot and burnt fibres that move from deep, opaque blacks to warm, golden yellows. Unlike his earlier monochromatic works, which focused on the purity of pigment, these fire paintings introduce a destructive, transformative element to the creative act. The marks are not applied by a brush, but are the physical residue of a chemical reaction.
Klein viewed these works as a way to capture the traces of the void, or the physical presence of the intangible. By using fire, he bypassed traditional artistic gesture, allowing the medium to act upon itself. The result is a composition that feels both chaotic and controlled, reflecting the artist's interest in the elemental forces of nature. This print captures the texture of the original cardboard, preserving the nuances of the burn patterns and the intensity of the colour transitions. It serves as a record of a performance, documenting the moment where the material was altered by the flame.
