A dreamlike composition by Paul Klee featuring floating fish, botanical elements, and a clock against a dark, atmospheric background.
Fish Magic, painted in 1925, is a representative example of Paul Klee's exploration of the intersection between reality and the subconscious. The composition features a dark, atmospheric background that suggests a deep-sea or nocturnal environment. Against this murky field, Klee places various motifs, including fish, flowers, a clock, and a human figure, all rendered with a delicate, linear quality that contrasts with the layered, textured surface of the canvas.
Klee employed a technique involving the scratching of paint to reveal lighter layers beneath, which contributes to the ethereal quality of the work. The fish, depicted in shades of yellow and blue, appear to float within the space, while the clock, suspended by a thin line, introduces a sense of temporal ambiguity. The human figure, positioned towards the bottom right, is drawn with simple, schematic lines, typical of Klee's interest in primitive or childlike modes of representation.
This work demonstrates Klee's ability to balance geometric precision with whimsical, dreamlike imagery. The inclusion of botanical elements, such as the daisy and the vase of flowers, adds a domestic touch to the otherwise mysterious setting. The painting does not rely on traditional perspective, opting instead for a flattened, ornamental arrangement that encourages the viewer to scan the surface rather than focus on a single point. By combining disparate objects in a non-narrative fashion, Klee invites individual interpretation of the relationships between the elements. The muted, dark tones of the background allow the brighter colours of the fish and flowers to emerge, creating a visual tension that is characteristic of his mid-1920s output. This piece remains a primary example of how Klee integrated his theoretical interests in colour and line with his personal, imaginative vision.
