A traditional six-panel Japanese folding screen depicting a coastal fishing village, rendered in ink and colour on a gold-leaf background.
This six-panel folding screen, or byōbu, presents a coastal scene executed with the refined techniques characteristic of Japanese screen painting. The composition utilises a gold-leaf ground, a common feature in traditional Japanese interiors designed to reflect light and brighten dim rooms. The artist, Andō Baiho, arranges the narrative across the panels, guiding the viewer from the foreground activities of the village to the distant, atmospheric mountains.
On the left, figures are depicted within a domestic setting, suggesting the daily life of a fishing community. The middle and right panels shift focus to the maritime environment, featuring traditional wooden boats anchored in the bay. The use of ink wash for the distant peaks and rocky outcrops provides a sense of depth, contrasting with the flatter, decorative treatment of the gold-leaf surface. The inclusion of a pagoda and temple structures on the right adds a layer of cultural context, grounding the scene in a specific regional aesthetic.
The lower portion of the screen is decorated with a repeating geometric textile pattern, which serves as a visual anchor for the more fluid, painterly elements above. This combination of structured pattern and free-form illustration is typical of the period, where functional furniture also acted as a canvas for artistic expression. The brushwork remains delicate, particularly in the rendering of the pine trees and the architectural details, demonstrating a high level of technical control. This piece offers a glimpse into the traditional Japanese approach to spatial organisation, where the physical divisions of the screen panels dictate the flow of the visual narrative.
