A refined woodblock print by Totoya Hokkei, featuring five cranes at the water's edge, executed in the delicate surimono style.
This woodblock print by Totoya Hokkei depicts a group of five cranes gathered at the water’s edge. As a prominent student of Katsushika Hokusai, Hokkei became a master of the surimono format, which refers to privately commissioned prints often distributed among poetry circles. These works were produced with high-quality materials, including metallic pigments and embossing, to demonstrate the technical skill of the carver and printer.
The composition focuses on the physical characteristics of the cranes, with their long, slender legs and distinct plumage rendered through precise line work. The artist uses a restrained colour palette, allowing the white of the paper to define the birds against the textured blue of the water and the sandy shore. The inclusion of calligraphy in the upper portion of the print suggests its origin as part of a collaborative project, where visual art and poetry were presented together for a sophisticated audience.
Hokkei’s approach to this subject avoids excessive ornamentation, favouring a balanced arrangement that captures the birds in various postures. The print demonstrates the technical refinement common in early nineteenth-century Japanese printmaking. By focusing on the interplay between the birds and their environment, the artist creates a scene that is both observational and decorative. The use of embossing on the feathers adds a tactile quality to the surface, a hallmark of the surimono tradition. This print serves as an example of the collaborative nature of Edo-period artistic production, where the expertise of the artist, poet, and artisan converged to create a singular object of aesthetic value.
