A detailed 1690 watercolour by Cornelis Dusart depicting five peasants socialising in a tavern, capturing the expressive character of Dutch genre art.
Cornelis Dusart, a pupil of Adriaen van Ostade, produced this work in 1690. It depicts a scene of social interaction within a rustic tavern, a subject matter common to the Dutch genre tradition. The composition features five figures engaged in drinking and conversation, rendered with the characteristic attention to physiognomy and expressive gesture that defined Dusart's output.
The artist employs a combination of ink outlines and watercolour washes to define the space. The interior is sparsely furnished, containing only essential items such as wooden barrels, stools, and a simple shelf holding ceramic jugs. A small print is visible on the back wall, adding a layer of domestic detail to the tavern setting. The figures are dressed in the typical attire of the period, with their postures suggesting a moment of boisterous activity or storytelling. The man on the left gestures with a raised hat and a glass, while his companions respond with laughter and animated expressions.
Dusart's technique here demonstrates his ability to capture the texture of worn clothing and the rough surfaces of the tavern environment. The palette is muted, relying on earth tones, ochres, and soft blues to maintain a sense of realism. The lighting is soft, entering from the window at the rear, which helps to model the forms of the figures and the surrounding objects. This work provides a view into the social habits of the lower classes in the late seventeenth century, presented without moralising intent. It remains a clear example of the Dutch interest in documenting the everyday lives of ordinary people, focusing on the camaraderie and informal gatherings that occurred in public houses of the era.
