A detailed fragment from Duccio's Maesta altarpiece, depicting the Flagellation of Christ with the characteristic grace of the Sienese School.
This image represents a fragment from the Maesta altarpiece, a monumental work commissioned for the Siena Cathedral. Duccio di Buoninsegna, a central figure of the Sienese School, executed this commission between 1308 and 1311. The scene depicts the Flagellation of Christ, a subject common in medieval devotional art.
Duccio employs a characteristic Sienese approach to form and colour. The central figure of Christ is bound to a column, his body rendered with a focus on anatomical clarity that was advanced for the period. The surrounding figures, representing the tormentors, display varied expressions and postures, contributing to the narrative tension of the scene. The background is a flat, uniform tone, typical of the period's preference for symbolic space over realistic perspective.
The use of tempera allows for precise detail, particularly in the rendering of the drapery and the subtle modelling of the figures. The gold leaf, though partially visible in the halo, provides a luminous quality that separates the sacred subject from the earthly realm. This fragment demonstrates the artist's ability to convey emotional weight through gesture and facial expression, maintaining a balance between decorative grace and narrative clarity. The composition is structured to draw the eye toward the central figure, while the surrounding actors provide a sense of movement and interaction. This work remains a primary example of the transition from Byzantine stylistic conventions toward the more humanistic approach that would define later Italian painting.
