Sébastien Bourdon (1616-1671) was a French painter and engraver, known for his classical style and versatility across various genres, including portraits, history paintings, and landscapes. He spent time in Italy early in his career and was influenced by the Italian masters. Bourdon also co-founded the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture. His work shows a blend of French and Italian artistic traditions. This etching depicts the Flight into Egypt, a biblical episode where Joseph and Mary flee to Egypt with the infant Jesus to escape King Herod's persecution. The composition shows Mary, carrying the child, seated on a donkey led by Joseph. The figures are rendered with fine, delicate lines, typical of Bourdon's etching style. The scene is framed by a tree on the right, adding depth to the composition. The figures' drapery is carefully detailed, and the overall effect is one of serene movement and classical balance.
