A refined woodblock print from the Momoyogusa series by Kamisaka Sekka, featuring a delicate arrangement of flowers against a stylised boat.
This woodblock print originates from the collection titled Momoyogusa, or Flowers of a Hundred Worlds, published in 1909. Kamisaka Sekka was a central figure in the revival of the Rinpa school during the early twentieth century. His work bridges traditional Japanese aesthetics with modern design sensibilities.
The composition features a diagonal sweep representing a boat, rendered in muted grey tones with calligraphic brushwork. Against this structural element, Sekka places a cluster of flora. The white blossoms, tinged with soft pink, dominate the right side of the frame. They are accompanied by smaller yellow flowers and deep red accents, creating a balance of colour against the neutral background. The leaves are depicted in dark, solid tones, providing a visual anchor for the lighter petals.
Sekka utilised the woodblock medium to achieve flat planes of colour and clean lines. This approach reflects the influence of the Rinpa tradition, which prioritises decorative arrangements and the simplification of natural forms. The print avoids excessive detail, focusing instead on the rhythm of the shapes and the interplay between the organic subjects and the geometric suggestion of the boat. The paper texture and the application of ink suggest a high level of craftsmanship, characteristic of the Kyoto print workshops of the period. This piece demonstrates the artist's ability to synthesise historical motifs with a contemporary eye for graphic clarity. It remains a clear example of the transition between classical Japanese art and the modern design movements that emerged in the early twentieth century.
