A square-format study of a summer garden, featuring a dense arrangement of colourful blossoms painted with rhythmic, textured brushstrokes.
Gustav Klimt painted this work during his summer holidays at Litzlberg on the Attersee. Unlike his earlier allegorical works or portraits, this piece focuses entirely on the natural world. Klimt adopts a square format, which removes the traditional horizon line and creates a flattened, decorative surface. The composition is filled with a dense array of blossoms, including zinnias, poppies, and asters, which appear to float upon the canvas.
The application of paint is varied, ranging from short, rhythmic brushstrokes that define individual petals to broader patches of colour that suggest the texture of foliage. The palette is dominated by greens, oranges, and whites, creating a sense of summer light. By avoiding a clear focal point, Klimt encourages the viewer to scan the entire surface, treating the garden as a mosaic of colour rather than a traditional perspective-based scene. This approach reflects the influence of Pointillism and the decorative sensibilities of the Vienna Secession, where the boundary between fine art and applied design often blurred.
Klimt spent many summers in the Salzkammergut region, where he found respite from the social demands of Vienna. These garden studies allowed him to experiment with colour theory and surface pattern in a more relaxed environment. The lack of human figures or architectural elements keeps the attention on the organic forms. This print captures the specific texture of the original oil paint, preserving the tactile quality of the brushwork. It is a study of light and colour, demonstrating how Klimt translated his decorative style into the observation of nature.
