This woodblock print by Hishikawa Moronobu captures a social gathering during the cherry blossom season in Ueno. As a primary figure in the development of the Ukiyo-e genre, Moronobu focused on the activities of the urban population in Edo. The scene depicts a group of figures seated behind a large, decorative curtain, which provides a sense of privacy for their outdoor entertainment.
Central to the composition is a musical performance. One figure plays the koto, while another accompanies on a flute, and a third holds a shamisen. The presence of food boxes and sake vessels indicates a leisurely afternoon spent enjoying the blossoms. To the right, a cherry tree with delicate, sparse blooms frames the group, grounding the figures in a specific seasonal context. The curtain itself is adorned with prominent crests, which serve as a visual anchor for the composition and denote the status of the participants.
Moronobu utilised the sumizuri-e technique, which relies entirely on black ink printed on paper. This method requires a high degree of precision in line work, as there is no colour to distract from the clarity of the forms. The lines are clean and descriptive, defining the folds of the kimono, the textures of the musical instruments, and the gnarled bark of the tree. The perspective is flattened, a characteristic feature of early Ukiyo-e, which prioritises the arrangement of figures and objects across the surface of the print. This work offers a view into the social customs of the seventeenth-century Japanese elite, documenting the intersection of nature, music, and social hierarchy.
