A refined diptych by Zhou Cunbo from 1870, featuring delicate botanical studies paired with symbolic scholar's rocks and traditional vessels.
This diptych by Zhou Cunbo, dated to the ninth year of the Tongzhi reign (1870), exemplifies the refined tradition of Chinese flower-and-bird painting. The composition is divided into two vertical hanging scrolls, each presenting a curated arrangement of botanical subjects paired with symbolic objects.
The first scroll features a gnarled, porous scholar's rock, or spiritual stone, positioned beside a tall, slender vase containing flowering peach branches. The rock, rendered with fluid ink washes, provides a rugged contrast to the delicate, pale pink blossoms. This juxtaposition of the permanent, weathered stone and the ephemeral, seasonal flower is a recurring theme in literati art, representing the balance between endurance and transience.
The second scroll depicts a more domestic scene, featuring a vibrant camellia in a ceramic vessel, accompanied by a pot of narcissus and a cluster of Buddha's hand fruit. The camellia blossoms are painted in a warm, saturated red, which draws the eye against the muted tones of the surrounding foliage. The inclusion of the Buddha's hand fruit, a variety of citron, adds a layer of auspicious symbolism, as the fruit is traditionally associated with happiness and longevity in Chinese culture.
Zhou Cunbo employs a calligraphic line quality throughout both works, using varying brush pressure to define the textures of the stone, the smooth surfaces of the ceramics, and the soft petals of the flowers. The composition remains largely flat, prioritising the decorative arrangement of forms over the creation of deep, three-dimensional space. The use of negative space, or white space, is deliberate, allowing the viewer to focus on the specific characteristics of each plant. These scrolls reflect the aesthetic values of the late Qing period, where technical precision and symbolic meaning were held in high regard. The work is presented here as a high-quality fine art print, capturing the subtle tonal variations of the original ink and colour on silk.
