This hanging scroll by Sō Shizan displays the characteristic precision of the Kacho-ga tradition, which focuses on the observation of birds and flowers. The composition centres on a large, octagonal ceramic basin placed upon a decorative stand. Within the basin, several goldfish swim, rendered with subtle shading that suggests movement beneath the water surface.

Above the basin, a dense arrangement of flora dominates the upper portion of the silk.
