A classic 1964 screenprint by Andy Warhol, featuring four abstracted hibiscus flowers in a bold, graphic style.
Andy Warhol produced his iconic Flowers series in 1964, drawing inspiration from a photograph of hibiscus blossoms published in a 1964 issue of Modern Photography magazine. By cropping and abstracting the original image, Warhol shifted the focus from the specific botanical subject to the mechanics of colour and repetition. This work demonstrates his interest in the serial nature of image production, a theme that defined much of his output during the 1960s.
The composition features four distinct floral shapes rendered in a flat, graphic style. The yellow petals contrast against a dark, textured background of grass, which is obscured by deep green and black tones. Warhol utilised the screenprinting process to achieve these sharp edges and saturated colours, removing the presence of the artist's hand in favour of a mechanical aesthetic. The repetition of the four blossoms creates a rhythmic visual experience, typical of his approach to mass-produced imagery.
Warhol's Flowers series was first exhibited at the Leo Castelli Gallery in New York. The series exists in various colour combinations and scales, reflecting the artist's experimentation with the possibilities of commercial printing techniques. By isolating the floral motif, Warhol transformed a common decorative subject into a graphic icon. This print captures the essence of his mid-career style, where the boundary between fine art and commercial design becomes blurred. The work remains a recognisable example of the Pop Art movement, documenting the shift in mid-century visual culture towards bold, reproducible imagery.
