A pastel drawing by Odilon Redon, depicting a simple arrangement of flowers in a rustic pot. The soft, delicate strokes and muted colour palette give the work a hazy, ethereal quality.
Odilon Redon (1840-1916) was a French Symbolist painter, printmaker, draughtsman and pastellist. His work explores inner experience and the subconscious, filled with dreamlike imagery and personal symbolism. Redon began his artistic training under Stanislas Gorin, and later studied at the École des Beaux-Arts. He was briefly associated with the Impressionists in the 1870s, but his style soon diverged, becoming more introspective and imaginative. He is now best known for his Symbolist works, which often feature mythological and fantastical subjects. This pastel drawing depicts a simple arrangement of flowers in a rustic pot. The composition is straightforward, with the pot placed centrally against a neutral background. The flowers, a mix of red and white blooms, are rendered with soft, delicate strokes, giving them a hazy, ethereal quality. The colour palette is restrained, dominated by earthy tones and muted shades, which adds to the work's dreamlike atmosphere. The drawing's simplicity and intimacy are characteristic of Redon's Symbolist style, which sought to evoke emotion and mood through suggestion rather than precise representation.
