A study of a floral arrangement in a traditional Quimper pitcher, rendered in the characteristic light-filled, painterly style of American Impressionist William James Glackens.
William James Glackens, a member of the group known as The Eight, produced this still life during the later period of his career. The composition focuses on a bouquet of flowers arranged within a traditional Quimper earthenware pitcher. Glackens employs a technique characterised by broken brushwork and a light-filled palette, which aligns with his interest in the French Impressionist tradition, particularly the work of Pierre-Auguste Renoir.
The flowers, rendered in shades of pink, orange, and white, occupy the upper portion of the frame. Their forms are suggested through rapid, gestural strokes rather than precise botanical detail. The Quimper pitcher, decorated with its characteristic folk-art motifs, sits upon a surface draped in fabric. The background consists of a textured, warm-toned surface that suggests a patterned wall covering, adding a sense of domestic intimacy to the scene.
Glackens often turned to still life subjects to explore colour relationships and the play of light on varied surfaces. In this work, the contrast between the smooth, glazed ceramic of the pitcher and the soft, organic texture of the petals demonstrates his technical approach. The painting avoids rigid structure, favouring a fluid, painterly quality that captures a fleeting impression of the arrangement. By focusing on the interplay of light and colour, Glackens creates a domestic scene that prioritises atmosphere over narrative content. This piece reflects the artist's transition from his earlier, darker Ashcan School style toward a more decorative and chromatic approach in his later years.
