A minimalist woodblock print from the 'Momoyogusa' collection, featuring a flower-draped cart rendered in bold, graphic lines by the Rinpa master Kamisaka Sekka.
This print originates from the celebrated collection 'Momoyogusa', or 'Flowers of a Hundred Worlds', published in 1909. Kamisaka Sekka was a central figure in the revival of the Rinpa school during the early twentieth century. His work bridges the gap between traditional Japanese aesthetics and the modern design sensibilities of the Meiji and Taisho periods.
This specific composition focuses on the 'Hanasashiguruma', or flower-draped cart, a motif rooted in classical Japanese literature and courtly life. Sekka employs a minimalist approach, placing the cart at the extreme edge of the frame. This use of negative space is a hallmark of his style, allowing the viewer to contemplate the balance between the empty paper and the bold, graphic lines of the cart. The woodblock technique captures the texture of the ink, with the stark black lines contrasting against the warm, aged tone of the paper.
Sekka was instrumental in introducing Western design principles to Japanese craft, yet he remained deeply connected to the decorative traditions of the seventeenth-century Rinpa masters. By simplifying forms and focusing on the essential silhouette, he created works that feel both historical and contemporary. This print demonstrates his ability to distil complex cultural symbols into clean, graphic elements. The composition invites a quiet observation of form, line, and the deliberate placement of objects within a field. It is a study in restraint, where the absence of detail is as intentional as the presence of the cart itself.
