A refined woodblock print by Kamisaka Sekka from his Momoyogusa album, featuring a figure playing the flute in a minimalist, traditional style.
Kamisaka Sekka was a central figure in the revival of the Rinpa school during the early twentieth century. This print originates from his celebrated album, Momoyogusa, or Flowers of a Hundred Worlds, published between 1909 and 1910. The collection demonstrates Sekka's ability to synthesise traditional Japanese aesthetics with modern design sensibilities.
In this specific composition, the artist depicts a figure viewed from behind, dressed in traditional attire. The green outer garment features a subtle, repeating pine needle motif, while the lower portion of the robe displays a decorative floral pattern. The figure holds a flute to their lips, suggesting a moment of quiet musical contemplation. The background remains largely empty, a characteristic choice that directs the viewer's attention to the form and posture of the subject.
Sekka utilised the woodblock medium to achieve flat, clean areas of colour and precise outlines. His approach avoids unnecessary detail, favouring a simplified, graphic quality that aligns with the principles of the Rinpa tradition. The palette is restrained, relying on soft greens, purples, and the warm, neutral tone of the paper to create a sense of balance. This work reflects the artist's broader interest in decorative arts and his desire to bring traditional beauty into the daily lives of his contemporaries. By stripping away extraneous elements, Sekka allows the viewer to focus on the essential lines and the rhythmic quality of the figure's silhouette. The print is a clear example of his refined approach to composition, where negative space functions as an active component of the overall design.
