A refined woodblock print from the 'Momoyogusa' collection by Kamisaka Sekka, featuring traditional Otsu-e folk art motifs rendered in a modern graphic style.
This woodblock print originates from the celebrated collection 'Momoyogusa', or 'Flowers of a Hundred Worlds', published between 1909 and 1910. Kamisaka Sekka, a master of the modern Rinpa school, created these designs to bridge traditional Japanese aesthetics with contemporary sensibilities. The work depicts Otsu-e, a genre of folk art originating from the town of Otsu near Kyoto. These paintings were historically sold to travellers as souvenirs or protective talismans.
Sekka employs a distinctive approach to composition, arranging the figures within diagonal bands that create a sense of movement across the paper. The figures, drawn from the traditional repertoire of Otsu-e, are rendered with a deliberate economy of line. The artist favours flat planes of colour and simplified forms, which reflect his training in both traditional Japanese painting and his exposure to Western design principles during his travels in Europe. The palette remains restrained, relying on muted tones punctuated by specific areas of saturated colour, such as the deep red of a garment or the blue of a sleeve.
Unlike the highly detailed ukiyo-e prints of the Edo period, this work prioritises graphic clarity and decorative balance. The figures appear to float against the cream-coloured background, their postures and expressions captured with a light, calligraphic touch. By reinterpreting these folk motifs through a modern lens, Sekka maintains the spirit of the original subjects while presenting them in a format suited to the early twentieth-century interior. The print demonstrates his ability to synthesise historical iconography with a clean, modern graphic style, resulting in a composition that feels both ancient and contemporary in its execution.
