A 14th-century manuscript folio featuring Muhaqqaq calligraphy and a gold illuminated medallion, reflecting the precision of medieval Islamic book arts.
This folio originates from a 14th-century Qur'an manuscript, likely produced in the Ilkhanid period. The page displays the Muhaqqaq script, a style of Islamic calligraphy characterised by its elongated vertical strokes and precise, rhythmic proportions. The text is written in black ink, with diacritical marks and vocalisation signs added in red and blue to assist with correct recitation.
The composition is balanced by a circular illuminated medallion, or shamsa, positioned in the upper right margin. This decorative element features gold leaf and geometric patterns, typical of the period's manuscript illumination. The parchment-like paper shows signs of age, providing a neutral background that allows the dark, structured lines of the script to dominate the visual field.
Islamic manuscript tradition prioritised the clarity and beauty of the written word. The scribe has maintained a consistent baseline, while the vertical letters provide a sense of upward movement. The inclusion of gold in the marginal ornamentation reflects the high status of the original codex. This print captures the technical precision of the scribe and the aesthetic conventions of medieval Islamic book arts. It is a study in the harmony between textual content and decorative form, where the arrangement of the letters on the page is as deliberate as the meaning of the verses themselves.
