A 1861 woodblock print by Utagawa Yoshitora depicting a social gathering between Westerners and Japanese entertainers in Yokohama.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Yoshitora, produced in 1861, belongs to the genre known as Yokohama-e. These prints documented the arrival of Westerners in Japan following the opening of the port of Yokohama in 1859. The work depicts a social gathering where foreign men and women interact with Japanese entertainers. The composition is divided into three panels, a common format for ukiyo-e prints of this period.
Visual elements reflect the curiosity of the Japanese public regarding foreign customs. The Western figures are dressed in mid-nineteenth-century attire, including top hats and crinoline dresses, while the Japanese women wear traditional kimono. The interior setting combines Western-style furniture, such as chairs and tables, with Japanese architectural features like sliding doors. The artist employs a flat perspective and clear outlines, characteristic of the ukiyo-e tradition, to organise the complex scene.
Yoshitora was a student of Utagawa Kuniyoshi and became known for his prolific output of prints documenting foreign subjects. This specific work captures a moment of cultural exchange, albeit through the lens of contemporary Japanese observation. The inclusion of musical instruments and dining items suggests a festive atmosphere. The print serves as a historical record of how the Japanese perceived the sudden influx of international visitors during the Bakumatsu period. The colour palette is balanced, utilising traditional woodblock pigments to render both the Western clothing and the Japanese interior with clarity. This print is a representative example of the fascination with the outside world that defined the early years of Japan's modernisation.
