Jules Dupré was a central figure of the Barbizon School, a group of French painters who prioritised direct observation of nature. This work captures a quiet, rural scene, typical of the artist's focus on the French countryside. The composition is anchored by a large, mature tree that rises vertically, creating a sense of scale against the expansive, cloud-filled sky. Below, cattle graze near a small pool of water, which reflects the light from above.

Dupré employs a technique characterised by heavy impasto and visible brushwork. The application of paint creates a textured surface, particularly in the foliage and the clouds. His palette consists of earthy tones, including deep greens, ochres, and browns, which are balanced by the lighter, cream-coloured highlights in the sky.
