A complex, abstract composition by Pavel Filonov, demonstrating his unique Analytical Art method through dense, atomised geometric forms and linear structures.
Pavel Filonov, a central figure in the Russian avant-garde, developed a unique philosophy he termed Analytical Art. This work, Formula of the Universe, reflects his belief that an artist should observe the world not as a static image, but as a collection of evolving biological and mechanical processes. Filonov approached his canvas by building up the composition from small, atomised units, which he referred to as cells or particles. This method creates a dense, multi-layered surface where geometric shapes, linear markings, and cryptic symbols intersect.
The composition is dominated by a central circular motif, acting as a nucleus for the surrounding web of lines and fragmented forms. Filonov utilised a precise, almost scientific application of ink and watercolour, layering thin strokes to construct a sense of cosmic complexity. The work avoids traditional perspective, opting instead for a flat, all-over distribution of visual information. This approach forces the viewer to scan the entire surface, as no single element takes precedence over the others.
Filonov often described his process as a form of organic growth. He believed that by painting each detail with total awareness, the final image would emerge as a living entity. The resulting aesthetic is one of high density and rigorous structure, far removed from the spontaneous gestures of his contemporaries. The palette remains controlled, relying on muted tones punctuated by sharp linear accents, which serve to organise the chaotic arrangement of forms. This piece offers a glimpse into the artist's attempt to map the hidden structures of reality through a systematic, analytical lens, rejecting representational art in favour of a visual language rooted in the fundamental building blocks of existence.
