A minimalist watercolour study by Hilma af Klint, featuring a central orange square and the Swedish word 'Framåt', representing the artist's spiritual and esoteric explorations.
This work belongs to the Parcifal series, a collection created by Hilma af Klint between 1916 and 1917. The series explores the spiritual journey of the individual, drawing upon esoteric traditions and the artist's own investigations into theosophy and anthroposophy. The composition is stark and minimal, featuring a single, hand-painted orange square set against a neutral, off-white background. Below the square, the Swedish word 'Framåt' (Forwards) is inscribed in a traditional, gothic-style typeface.
The simplicity of the form reflects af Klint's desire to represent metaphysical concepts through geometric reduction. Unlike many of her contemporaries who moved toward abstraction through the lens of pure aesthetic theory, af Klint viewed her work as a medium for communicating hidden truths about the physical and spiritual planes. The application of the watercolour is visible, showing the texture of the brushstrokes and the variations in pigment density, which provides a tactile quality to the otherwise flat, symbolic form.
Af Klint produced this series during a period of intense personal and artistic development. She often worked in isolation, creating these pieces as part of a larger, private project intended for a future audience. The inclusion of text within the visual field is a recurring device in her work, bridging the gap between linguistic meaning and visual representation. This print captures the essence of her early twentieth-century experiments, offering a clear view of her approach to colour and form as tools for spiritual inquiry. The work remains a significant example of early European abstraction, predating many of the more widely recognised movements of the era.
