A detailed albumen print by Pascal Sébah depicting the ornate 18th-century Fountain of Sultan Ahmed III in Constantinople, featuring figures posed before the stone facade.
This albumen print by Pascal Sébah captures the Fountain of Sultan Ahmed III, a structure located near the Imperial Gate of Topkapi Palace in Istanbul. Constructed in 1728 during the Tulip Period, the fountain is a prime example of Ottoman rococo architecture. Sébah, who operated a studio in Constantinople, was known for documenting the city's monuments and inhabitants for a growing market of European travellers and collectors.
The composition focuses on the symmetrical facade of the fountain. The stone surfaces are covered in relief carvings, featuring floral motifs and calligraphic inscriptions. The central arch and the flanking niches provide a rhythmic structure to the image. Several men are positioned along the base of the fountain, their presence providing a sense of scale to the massive stone construction. The figures, dressed in a mix of traditional and Western attire, reflect the cosmopolitan nature of the city during the late nineteenth century.
Sébah utilised the albumen process, which was the standard for commercial photography during this era. This method allowed for the reproduction of fine details, such as the lattice screens covering the fountain's windows and the texture of the weathered stone. The lighting is even, typical of his approach to architectural documentation, which prioritised clarity and topographical accuracy. The print remains a valuable record of the site before later restorations and urban changes. By presenting the monument in this manner, Sébah provided viewers with a direct encounter with the aesthetic and cultural history of the Ottoman capital. The work functions as a historical document, preserving the physical state of the fountain and the social atmosphere of the period.
