Description
Fountains Abbey in North Yorkshire preserves a great monastic ruin in the Skell valley, where a tall tower and open Gothic arches rise above green lawns beside the reflective river.
Founded in 1132, Fountains Abbey became a Cistercian monastery in the secluded valley of the Skell. Its religious life ended with the Dissolution in 1539, and the ruins were later incorporated into Studley Royal's eighteenth-century designed landscape in North Yorkshire.
A tall square tower stands beside roofless walls pierced by narrow pointed openings. The river leads in from the left foreground, reflecting pieces of pale stone and sky before passing beneath a small arch. Broad green lawns spread to the right, enclosed by dense trees. Full foliage suggests summer, with sunlight picking out the masonry and casting long tree shadows across the grass.
