A geometric abstraction by Max Bill, featuring a four-by-four grid of balanced colours, reflecting the principles of Concrete Art.
Max Bill was a central figure in the development of Concrete Art, a movement that prioritised mathematical precision and the autonomy of visual elements over representational content. This work, Four Equal Groups of Four, demonstrates his rigorous approach to composition. The canvas is divided into a four-by-four grid, creating sixteen individual squares. Bill employs a systematic arrangement of colour, balancing deep blues, dark reds, and teal tones to create a sense of equilibrium across the surface.
As a student at the Bauhaus in Dessau, Bill absorbed the principles of functionalism and geometric clarity. He later applied these concepts to painting, sculpture, and industrial design. In this piece, the absence of narrative allows the viewer to focus entirely on the relationship between the colours and the grid structure. The composition avoids centralisation, instead distributing visual weight evenly across the entire square format. The thin orange border provides a sharp contrast to the cooler and darker tones within the grid, framing the internal logic of the work.
Bill believed that art should be a product of the human mind, constructed from clear, objective elements. By using a mathematical grid, he removes the subjective gesture of the artist, allowing the interaction of colour and form to dictate the experience. The work functions as a study in chromatic relationships, where the repetition of the square format creates a rhythmic visual experience. This print captures the precise application of paint and the deliberate colour choices that define Bill's contribution to twentieth-century abstraction. It is an example of his ability to transform simple geometric parameters into a coherent visual statement.
