Description
Fowlsheugh lines the Aberdeenshire coast south of Stonehaven, where sheer cliffs provide ledges for breeding seabirds above the North Sea and a grassland path follows the exposed shoreline.
Around five kilometres south of Stonehaven, the reserve protects a long stretch of coastal cliffs. Basalt and conglomerate form its rock faces, whose ledges support guillemots, razorbills and kittiwakes during the breeding season, making this an important mainland seabird colony.
Fowlsheugh extends away through successive headlands, their warm grey faces dropping into deep blue water. Golden green grass caps the cliffs, and low offshore rocks interrupt the sea beside the nearest inlet. Thin white surf traces the shoreline. Cream clouds cross a clear sky, while dry grass and strong sunlight suggest summer above the water, without individual birds resolved in the view.
