A rare sixteenth-century engraving by Abraham de Bruyn depicting French noblemen and a councillor, showcasing the detailed costume study of the period.
This engraving by Abraham de Bruyn, a prolific Dutch printmaker active in Antwerp and Cologne, depicts figures of the French nobility and a councillor. The work originates from a broader series documenting contemporary European dress and social hierarchy. De Bruyn was known for his precise, technical approach to printmaking, often producing plates that served as visual records of the fashions and status symbols of the late sixteenth century.
The print features two distinct scenes. On the left, a mounted French nobleman is shown in profile, his attire rendered with careful attention to the textures of his garments and the anatomy of his horse. The Latin inscription, 'Nobiles vel Franci vel Belge in opidis obequitantes', identifies the subject as a nobleman riding through a town. On the right, a councillor is depicted in formal robes, accompanied by the label 'Parlamento Parisiensi', referencing the Parlement of Paris.
Despite the significant loss of paper substrate, the remaining fragments demonstrate the fine line work characteristic of De Bruyn's output. The engraving style is typical of the period, utilising hatching and cross-hatching to define form and shadow. Such prints were often collected by scholars and enthusiasts of history to understand the visual culture of the era. This piece offers a glimpse into the meticulous documentation of European social strata during the Renaissance. The composition is structured around the figures, with Latin text providing context for the viewer. It remains a valuable example of how printmakers of the sixteenth century captured the nuances of costume and rank, preserving these details for future study.
