A 1599 engraving by Raffaello Guidi depicting a young boy seated on a large dog, holding an owl, executed with precise Mannerist line work.
This engraving by Raffaello Guidi, dated 1599, depicts a young boy named Frederik de Vries. The composition presents the subject in a playful, allegorical manner, seated upon the back of a large, shaggy dog. The boy holds a small owl aloft on his right hand, a detail that adds a sense of curiosity to the scene. The background features a wooded area with a distant view of a coastal town, rendered with the precise line work characteristic of late sixteenth-century Italian printmaking.
Guidi, an Italian engraver active in Rome, demonstrates a high degree of technical control in this work. The textures of the dog's fur, the boy's ruff collar, and the foliage of the tree are differentiated through varied hatching and cross-hatching techniques. The figure of the boy is rendered with the elongated proportions and expressive features often associated with the Mannerist style of the period. The inclusion of a cartouche at the bottom, containing Latin inscriptions, provides a formal structure to the print, typical of the era's portraiture and allegorical studies.
This print captures a moment of quiet interaction between the boy and his animal companion. The contrast between the stillness of the dog and the alert posture of the boy creates a balanced visual narrative. The work reflects the technical standards of the Roman print trade at the turn of the seventeenth century, where engravers often collaborated with painters to produce high-quality reproductions and original compositions for a discerning audience. The attention to detail in the clothing and the natural elements suggests a focus on both character study and technical display.
