A woodblock print from the Yokohama-e genre, depicting a French family as interpreted by Japanese artist Ichiryūsai Yoshitoyo during the mid-nineteenth century.
This woodblock print by Ichiryūsai Yoshitoyo belongs to the genre of Yokohama-e, a category of Japanese art that emerged following the opening of the port of Yokohama to foreign trade in 1859. These prints provided the Japanese public with visual information about the appearance, customs, and technology of Westerners, who were then a novel sight in the country.
The composition depicts a French family, presented through the lens of Japanese artistic conventions of the mid-nineteenth century. The woman is shown in a voluminous, patterned skirt, while a child sits atop a horse. A second child stands alongside, holding the reins. The artist employs a flattened perspective and bold, graphic outlines, which are characteristic of the Ukiyo-e tradition. The figures exhibit the stylistic features common to Yokohama-e, where Western subjects are often rendered with a degree of caricature or exoticism, reflecting the curiosity and limited direct experience of the Japanese artists at the time.
The colour palette is dominated by muted, earthy tones, typical of the woodblock printing techniques of the period. The print serves as a record of the cultural exchange and the fascination with the 'other' that defined the early years of the Meiji era. The inclusion of Japanese-style cartouches and the specific treatment of the horse and clothing demonstrate the synthesis of traditional Japanese printmaking methods with the new subject matter of international visitors. This work is a clear example of how Japanese artists interpreted the arrival of Westerners, blending observation with established aesthetic norms to satisfy a domestic market eager to understand the changing world beyond their borders.
