A classic Yokohama-e woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige II, depicting a French woman and her child in a traditional Japanese setting.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige II belongs to the genre known as Yokohama-e, which emerged during the late Edo period. As Japan opened its ports to international trade, artists documented the arrival of foreigners with curiosity. This work depicts a French woman, her child, and a dog, rendered through the distinct aesthetic lens of the mid-nineteenth-century Japanese printmaker.
The composition features the woman holding a parasol, dressed in European attire that would have appeared exotic to the contemporary Japanese viewer. Her voluminous skirt is decorated with floral motifs, while the child sits beside a black dog near a green fence. Above them, cherry blossoms suggest the season, providing a familiar Japanese backdrop to the foreign subjects. The artist employs the traditional flat perspective and bold outlines characteristic of the Ukiyo-e tradition, yet the subject matter reflects the rapid cultural shifts occurring in port cities like Yokohama.
Utagawa Hiroshige II, a student of the master Hiroshige, captures these figures with a blend of observation and stylistic convention. The print serves as a record of the fascination with Western fashion and customs during a period of transition. The colour palette remains balanced, utilising soft pinks for the blossoms, deep blues for the sky, and earthy tones for the figures. The inclusion of Japanese calligraphy within the cartouche provides context for the scene, identifying the subjects for the original audience. This piece offers a glimpse into the cross-cultural exchanges that defined the final years of the shogunate, presenting a unique intersection of Eastern printmaking techniques and Western iconography.
