An illustration by Arthur Rackham depicts Fricka, the Norse goddess, riding a ram-drawn chariot with an angry expression. The work is characterised by fine lines, delicate watercolour washes, and a muted colour palette.
This illustration by Arthur Rackham (1867-1939), a British book illustrator, captures a scene of Fricka, the goddess of marriage and domesticity in Norse mythology. Rackham was a leading figure during the Golden Age of British book illustration, which roughly spanned from the 1890s until the start of the First World War. His style is characterised by its imaginative, often grotesque, figures and detailed, slightly unsettling, depictions of nature. In this work, Fricka is depicted riding a chariot pulled by rams, her face set with determination or anger. The composition is framed by gnarled trees, their branches reaching across the sky, and a background of misty mountains. Rackham's use of fine lines and delicate watercolour washes creates a dreamlike atmosphere, typical of his illustrations for fairy tales and mythological stories. The colour palette is muted, with blues, greys, and browns dominating, which adds to the overall sense of foreboding and drama.
