A formal Baroque engraving by Elias Nessenthaler depicting the military commander Friedrich Graf von Veterani in armour and a period periwig.
This engraving by Elias Nessenthaler depicts Friedrich Graf von Veterani, a military figure of the late seventeenth century. The portrait follows the conventions of aristocratic representation common in the Baroque period, presenting the subject within a trompe-l'oeil oval frame that rests upon a stone plinth. The Latin inscription at the base identifies the sitter, noting his title and his role as a commander in Transylvania.
Nessenthaler employs precise line work to distinguish the textures of the subject's attire. The plate armour is rendered with clean, parallel hatching to suggest the reflective quality of polished metal, while the cravat is depicted with softer, more fluid lines to indicate the delicate nature of the fabric. The sitter wears a voluminous periwig, a hallmark of the era's fashion, which frames his face and cascades over his shoulders. The artist uses varying densities of cross-hatching to create depth within the oval, ensuring the figure appears to emerge from the background.
As a printmaker active in Augsburg, Nessenthaler produced numerous portraits of nobility and military officers. These works were often intended for inclusion in biographical collections or as standalone commemorative prints. The composition is balanced and formal, adhering to the standard portrait format of the time. The focus remains on the sitter's status, conveyed through his military dress and the dignified, direct gaze directed at the viewer. This print provides a clear example of early eighteenth-century graphic portraiture, where the technical skill of the engraver was used to document the appearance and rank of historical figures for a contemporary audience.
