A botanical illustration by Maria Sibylla Merian from 'Metamorphosis insectorum Surinamensium', Plate XIII depicts the Spondias purpurea tree with its fruit, flowers, and accompanying butterflies. This print exemplifies Merian's unique blend of scientific observation and artistic skill.
This print originates from Maria Sibylla Merian's groundbreaking work, 'Metamorphosis insectorum Surinamensium'. Published in 1705, this study documented her scientific expedition to Suriname, where she observed and illustrated the life cycles of insects and their relationships with host plants. Merian's approach, combining scientific observation with artistic skill, was revolutionary for its time. She challenged prevailing scientific views and contributed significantly to the fields of entomology and botany. Her work is admired for its accuracy and aesthetic qualities. Plate XIII depicts the Spondias purpurea, also known as the purple mombin or Spanish plum, a tropical fruit-bearing tree. The composition features the tree's branches, leaves, flowers, and fruit, along with two butterflies. The leaves are rendered in shades of green, with detailed veining. The fruit is a cluster of bright yellow plums. Delicate white flowers bloom at the top of the branch. Two butterflies, one blue and one pink, add a touch of colour and animation to the scene. The illustration is characterised by its fine lines and meticulous attention to detail.
