A botanical illustration by Maria Sibylla Merian, this print comes from 'Metamorphosis insectorum Surinamensium' and depicts a plant alongside a caterpillar, chrysalis, and moth, illustrating the stages of insect metamorphosis.
This print originates from Maria Sibylla Merian's influential work, 'Metamorphosis insectorum Surinamensium'. Published in 1705, this book documented her scientific expedition to Suriname, where she studied and illustrated the life cycles of insects. Merian's approach combined scientific observation with artistic skill, producing detailed and accurate depictions of plants and insects in their natural habitats. Her work challenged prevailing scientific views and contributed significantly to the fields of entomology and botany. She was among the first to illustrate insects with the plants they fed on. Plate XLV presents a plant with yellow-and-red flowers, leaves, seed pods, a caterpillar, a chrysalis, and a moth. The composition is carefully arranged to display the various stages of insect metamorphosis alongside the host plant. The fine lines and delicate hand-colouring enhance the detail of each element, from the intricate patterns on the moth's wings to the texture of the caterpillar's skin. The overall effect is both informative and aesthetically pleasing, reflecting Merian's dual role as scientist and artist.
