A detailed engraving from Maria Sibylla Merian's *Metamorphosis insectorum Surinamensium*, Plate XX depicts the White Witch moth (Thysania agrippina), its caterpillar, and pupa, showcasing her meticulous observations of insect life cycles in Suriname.
This print originates from Maria Sibylla Merian's influential work, *Metamorphosis insectorum Surinamensium*, published in 1705. Merian (1647-1717) was a German-Swiss naturalist and scientific illustrator. She is celebrated for her detailed observations and depictions of insects and plants. Her journey to Suriname in 1699 was remarkable for a woman of her time, allowing her to study and document the life cycles of insects in their natural habitat. Plate XX features the Thysania agrippina, commonly known as the White Witch moth, along with its caterpillar and pupa. The moth is displayed with its distinctive patterned wings, showcasing Merian's skill in capturing the insect's unique markings. The caterpillar is shown feeding on a branch with leaves, while the pupa hangs nearby. The composition is both scientifically informative and aesthetically pleasing, reflecting Merian's artistic talent and scientific rigour. Her work contributed significantly to the fields of entomology and botany.
